Diana was introduced to the Emanuel's through a photo shoot she did with British Vogue. Without revealing who the clothes were for, the magazine asked the Emanuel's to send in some pieces that might be suitable. The Emanuel's were one of 6 designers asked to submit their ideas on how they would design Diana’s wedding dress if given the commission. David and Elizabeth were delighted to be chosen, and even further delighted that they and three of their employees were invited to the wedding as guests.

Nineteen year old Lady Diana Spencer, Prince Charles’s fiancee, makes her first official appearance at a gala evening at Goldsmith’s Hall to raise funds for the Royal Opera House in London on March 9, 1981. Diana wore a stunning gown designed by the Emanuels. To Goldsmiths Hall in the capital Diana wore the black gown and though she looked amazing, the dress itself had not been a choice warmly received by Charles, black for the royals being the colour of mourning and it's being strapless and low cut considered by him to be far too revealing, the worlds press however loved it.

On 24th February 1981, Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles officially became engaged.
Lady Diana wore a cobalt blue suit, purchased off the peg from Harrods, worn with a blue and white silk bird print pussy bow blouse and blue shoes.
Lady Diana's ring consists of 14 solitaire diamonds surrounding a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire set in 18-karat white gold. It was created by jeweler Garrard and cost at the time, 28,000 pounds sterling. Diana's selection of this ring was unusual. It was neither custom-made nor unique and was, at the time of her engagement to Charles, featured in Garrard's jewellery collection and available to anyone for purchase. Some commentators say Diana selected it because it reminded her of her mother's engagement ring. Jewellery historian Leslie Field stated: "She [Diana] had obviously already said she would like a sapphire; she had half a dozen rings [to select from] and she chose this one purely because she liked it." Fields continued: "Somebody came up with the story that she immediately went for the biggest, but I asked her and she told me it definitely wasn't the biggest, she simply thought it was very beautiful."
